Friday June 29th

Day spent in Cloak and Dagger work in Gainsborough with Dan. We are responding to a tip-off from Dylan on Wednesday concerning the whereabouts of Dave G (new address) and his daily schedule.

My plan is to ‘haunt’ him as a means of revenge. (Simon has already put us off the idea of the Small Claims Court, persuading us it is a lot of effort and expense for little, if any, return.)

Dan agrees to accompany me following last night’s Thursday Night Club meeting at the Cross Keys Inn, Salmonby, where the cocktail tasting in between pints of beer makes for a raucous evening and rash promises (except for me).

Dan drives (White VW Touareg). He picks me up early and we drive over to Gainsborough where we stake out Dave G’s new address on Heapham Crescent and wait for him to emerge. All morning we ‘tail’ Dave G in his brown Range Rover and Dan drops me off wherever he parks.

Our first port of call is the small café in Trinity Street. I wait for Dave G to get settled, then approach the window, shade my eyes and peer in. Notice Dave G immediately and he sees me. He turns red, nearly chokes on his tea, and lowers his forehead to within inches of the tablecloth. I immediately disappear so that when he looks up, I am gone.

We repeat this at Tescos (a quick glance over the melon pyramid on the fruit and veg counter) and in Next in Marshall’s Yard (passing him in the doorway on his exit). Dan reports that he runs to his Range Rover after this final encounter and speeds away. The whole operation takes two and a half hours and, if nothing else, it leaves me feeling that Dave G has not got away with the theft of our money scot-free.

Thank Dan with a bottle of prosecco from our ‘cellar’ when he drops me off. I report back to Jan who enjoys an endless retelling of the episodes, particularly the description of Dave G’s incredulity and discomfort. She is still chuckling when we go to bed.
